The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for the Assin Fosu Municipal Assembly, Charlotte Boakye, has been overwhelmingly rejected by assembly members following a confirmation vote conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Commission.

According to the declaration of results from the EC, only five members of the Assembly voted in favour of the nominee, representing 22.73% of the total votes cast.

In contrast, a staggering 17 members, or 77.27%, voted against the nominee’s approval.

This result effectively disqualifies Charlotte Boakye from assuming the role of MCE, as per the required two-thirds majority threshold mandated by local government regulations.

The vote took place on Monday, April 14, 2025, during a specially convened Assembly session in Assin Fosu.

All 22 assembly members were present and voted, with no rejected ballots, confirming the clear consensus against the nominee.

This development adds to a growing list of local assemblies that have pushed back on government-nominated appointees in recent times, often citing concerns about suitability, lack of consultation, or political misalignment with local interests.

Though no official reason was not immediately given for the rejection, sources within the Assembly suggest that members were not convinced of the nominee’s ability to lead the municipality effectively, with some alleging that the nomination process lacked adequate stakeholder engagement.

The Municipal Coordinating Director and the Presiding Officer jointly signed off on the official declaration of results, confirming the accuracy of the vote count.

With the rejection of Charlotte Boakye, the Municipal Assembly now awaits a fresh nomination from the Presidency, as stipulated under Ghana’s Local Governance Act.

The government is expected to engage in broader consultations to avoid a repeat of this outcome and ensure a nominee acceptable to the local assembly members.

This setback comes at a time when residents of Assin Fosu are calling for more responsive and visionary leadership to tackle developmental challenges, including youth unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and sanitation issues.
