In the 2025 Budget presentation to Parliament on March 11, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced a GH¢100 million allocation to provide monthly allowances for Assembly Members across the country. This move underscores the government’s recognition of the vital role Assembly Members play in grassroots governance and local development.

“Mr. Speaker, an amount of GH¢100 million has been allocated for the payment of monthly allowances to all Assembly Members,” Dr. Forson declared, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting these local officials.

For years, Assembly Members have faced challenges in fulfilling their responsibilities due to a lack of financial support, often relying on personal funds to carry out their duties.

This new allocation aims to address this gap and improve service delivery at the district level, ensuring that Assembly Members are better equipped to manage local governance and drive community development.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Mahama administration to strengthen governance, create jobs, and revamp the economy.

Other notable financial commitments in the budget include GH¢51.3 million in seed funding for the Women’s Development Bank, GH¢300 million for the National Apprenticeship Programme, GH¢100 million for the ‘Adwumawura’ Programme, and GH¢100 million for the National Coders Programme.

Additionally, Dr. Forson revealed that resources have been allocated for disaster relief efforts, particularly for communities affected by tidal waves in Ketu South.

These budgetary measures demonstrate the government’s focus on empowering local leaders, providing young people with valuable skills, and enhancing economic productivity, ensuring that grassroots governance is an effective driver of real development in communities across the country.
