Leader and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has clarified that recent comments made by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC, about the party’s unwillingness to sign the peace declaration were not the official position of the party.
Mr. Nketia recently stated that the NDC has no interest in signing any peace declaration pact ahead of the December 7 general elections.
He cited unresolved issues, such as the killing of eight Ghanaians during voting in the previous general election, as reasons for the party’s disinterest in signing a peace pact.
However, the flagbearer of the party, John Dramani Mahama, told journalists in Ho on Friday, August 16, that Mr. Nketia’s statement is not the official position of the party. He added, however, that he appreciates Mr. Nketia’s comments.
According to Mahama, the party’s leadership has not yet convened to deliberate and reach a conclusion on whether to sign a peace declaration with other stakeholders.
“I read the statement made by our Chairman [Asiedu Nketia] this morning and even though it is not a decision that we have sat and taken, I can understand the position that he’s coming from,” Mahama noted.
