The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has formally requested President John Dramani Mahama to begin constitutional processes for the removal of Auditor General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, citing gross misconduct and constitutional violations.

The petition, which was signed by the Executive Director of the civil society organization, Mensah Thompson, and delivered to the Presidency on Thursday, April 3, accuses the Auditor General of high crimes, abuse of office, and unlawful conduct.

Among the key allegations are his failure to comply with Supreme Court directives, which ASEPA argues constitutes a “high crime” under Article 2(4) of the 1992 Constitution.

The petition also accuses the Auditor General of conspiring with the Audit Service Board to undermine Parliament’s authority, violating Article 187(15).

Additionally, ASEPA claims the Auditor General illegally retained public funds, contravening Section 17(2) of the Audit Service Act, and abused his discretionary powers in breach of Article 296.

The removal process, as outlined under Article 187(13) of the Constitution, mirrors that of a Chief Justice’s impeachment under Article 146. This requires a presidential referral to the Chief Justice for investigation, followed by potential parliamentary action.

Mensah Thompson further stressed that the petition is backed by evidence and called for swift action to uphold accountability.

The Auditor General’s office has not yet responded to the allegations. The move intensifies pressure on Ghana’s governance institutions, with civil society groups closely monitoring the Presidency’s next steps.
