Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan has abandoned the New Patriotic Party (NPP), three months ahead of the general elections. The former Black Stars captain stated that he would prefer to contribute to society through humanitarian work rather than use politics as a tool for that purpose.

The flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, had earlier this year named Mr. Gyan, popularly known as Baby Jet, as the chairman of his Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee.

In a statement, the 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year stated that “I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Hence forth I am not affiliated to any political party, I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political, I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on the 7th December, God bless our homeland Ghana, thank you.”

He added that his decision to step away from politics is due to his love for children, and he is resolved to championing initiatives for their betterment in the future.

“As a proud Ghanaian, deeply connected to our people, I feel a strong responsibility to give back to the community that shaped me. Football has taken me to the world’s biggest stages, but it’s the values I learned here-resilience, discipline, and unity-that have made me who I am.” he stated.

Gyan reiterated that “this is not about politics; I am fully independent from political influence. This is about our children, our communities, and our continent. Together, with the support of international organizations, royal families, and philanthropic partners, we can create lasting change that empowers our youth to build the future they deserve.”

He stressed, his main focus henceforth will be on the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, adding that “My vision is to empower the youth of Ghana and Africa through sports and philanthropy.”
