MoMo operators considers nationwide strike

A group calling itself the Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has issued a warning to the Akufo-Addo-led government over its lack of commitment to the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey‘.

The effects of illegal mining in recent times have reached an alarming state, with numerous roads, water bodies, homes, and farmlands being destroyed by the practice.

Several statesmen and civil organizations have called on the government to take decisive action, including declaring a state of emergency or temporarily banning small-scale mining.

Addressing a forum organized by Channel One TV on the theme “I Stand Against Galamsey” on Monday, September 16, 2024, Kingsley Amoako Atta, National Secretary of MOMAG, revealed that they will declare a nationwide sit down strike if the government does not end the current ‘galamsey’ situation.

He said, “In light of the government’s inaction, MOMAG is left with no choice but to consider a nationwide strike and this strike will impact momo transactions, bill payments, salary payments, and financial inclusion will also be affected.”

The mobile money operators also listed what they believe would immediately end the canker, including declaring a state of emergency over all water bodies, canceling all mining leases that cross water bodies, enforcing laws and regulations governing mining activities, and lastly, providing alternative livelihoods for illegal miners.
