The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated unequivocally that there shall not be any activities of LGBTQI+ in Ghana if he is elected president.
He said regardless of the potential repercussions he is willing to safeguard the country’s culture and values.
Addressing a meeting with the clergy in Tamale on May 16, Dr Bawumia said, “On this matter of LGBTQ, I want to say again without any equivocation that we will not allow it in Ghana. It is not going to be allowed. Our Bible says no, our Quran says no, and our people say no. So no. That is the answer.”
“No man will be marrying a man, no woman will be marrying a woman. It is not our value. And I will stand firm no matter the consequences. We will stand firm on that matter no matter the consequences. We will safeguard our country and we will safeguard our people.”
The comment follows a similar statement on April 11, when he addressed Muslims at the Kumasi Central Mosque during the Eidul-Fitr prayers.
“…as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’. No shades of grey,” he told the Muslim community in Kumasi.
“Therefore, I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocably forbid. All the major religious traditions in Ghana (Christianity and Islam) are opposed to this practice and I stand opposed to it now and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah.”
