Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader Wednesday declared that allegations of irregularities in the construction of the new Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters have been laid to rest.
This follows a comprehensive breakdown of the project’s costs presented by Governor Dr Johnson Asiama to Parliament.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin praised Dr. Asiama’s transparency, stating, “Mr. Speajer, he has taken us through the step-by-step processes and the step-by-step procedures that the bank followed. I think that is a mark of leadership, and on this side of the house, we convey to you our respect for that sincerity.”
The Minority Leader noted that the cost variations in the project were justified by essential security measures, including the inclusion of a power generation system, a recycling system, and additional buildings beyond the original scope.
Dr. Asiama had earlier faced criticism over the project’s cost, with the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority Caucus demanding the resignation of the former BoG Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his deputies.
However, Mr.. Afenyo-Markin’s statement suggested that the concerns had been addressed.
The new Bank of Ghana headquarters, valued at over $250 million, has been a subject of controversy, with some questioning why the prject was rioritised amidst economic challenges.
