The leading and most preferred aspirant by many students for the 2020/2021 SRC race, Mr. Albert Agoabey has donated some items to the University management and some student groups on campus to augment the efforts towards ensuring improved service delivery for all students.
Mr. Albert happens to be a former student of University of Ghana with first class honours in Sociology with Psychology and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Public Administration and currently reading Post First Degree Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Wisconsin International University College. His enviable academic credentials coupled with his humility, and friendliness aside other achievements in life propels him ahead of his competitors. To many students, he possess the required experience and better suitable for leading the student front for mutual benefit for all.
Politically, he has vast experience in leadership both in the outside world and in students’ leadership from the days of senior high school and at the University of Ghana. The recent of which was the Speaker of Parliament for Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) at the University of Ghana.
In industry, Mr. Albert has worked with the Ministry of Local government in various Districts including Nkwanta North, Krachi Nchumbru in the Oti Region and North Tongu Bator and Anloga Districts respectively in the Volta Region, in the capacity as District Budget Analyst aside other key roles. He is also a former teacher and devoted catholic.
His motivation for contesting the position of SRC President is to strategically eliminate apathy among students in WIUC to promote active participatory governance and patronage of all Programs of the SRC for robust student activism directed at positive advocacy for students’ interest.
According to Albert, the main role of student leadership is to complement the efforts of University Management without compromising students’ interest for collective and mutual growth and development.
Some of the items donated included, toiletry materials to the Wisconsin Nursing and Midwifery Students’ Association (WIUNSA) including T-rolls among others. He also donated four 140 liters waste bins to the University Management to back up the waste management efforts on campus as well as some religious items like prayer bids and mats, ablution slippers and a wall clock among others to the Ghana Muslim Students Association (GMSA) on campus. Plans are on course in soliciting supports to various student groups for an improved leadership.
Some of the flagship progrms and policies of Albert are as follows, wizzy- mentors, identify and build a pool of working class or students in industry to connect with full time students to serve as a ready resource for internship, NSS placements and potential job security.
One traveling passport for every student. With this, he intends to establish a desk at the SRC office purposely for facilitating and making it easier for students who are willing to acquire traveling passports.
Free souvenirs for every students during registration under his watch, every student will receive free SRC branded t-shirt, pen, exercise books, pen drives among others.
Design and Print SRC branded clothe for sale at a reduced cost for students, to raise revenue and to market the brand of the SRC
Commercialization of the SRC brand for revenue generation. by this, the SRC under his watch will design souvenirs, with the SRC logo for sale to students and alumni for revenue generation
Establish estate and sanitation committee within first fourteen days in office to serve as liaison between administration and the SRC for improved sanitary conditions and environment.
Establish and provide adequate resources and funding to sports and entertainment committee and also lobby for some academic privileges for students in sports.
Provide departmental subsidies for all Associations and Unions on campus
Provide office space for the departmental students associations to enhance effective governance.
He promised to continue the good works of the current administration by ensuring that some sustainable programs and projects such as WIZZY STUDENTS TUTORS receive a face lift by providing increased budgetary allocations to boost the morale of student tutors.
On academics he has plans such as, Lobby for a 24-hour Extension of Library Time during exams period to allow for evening and weekends students to access the library.
Lobby the University Administration to Facilitate the establishment of an E-Library with all reading materials including past questions, research articles etc.
Lobby the University Administration through the IT Department to upgrade the Internet Network (Wi-Fi bandwidth) for stronger signals to facilitate research and learning
On students’ welfare and advocacy his plans are as follows
Lobby for the Issuance of provisional ID cards at a reduced price as evidence to allow students with misplaced ID cards to write exams.
Lobby the University administration to Extend the Registration period to at least Four Weeks to enable many students meet the dead line without Penalty Charges.
In the area of Gender Equity and Women Empowerment he has outline some achievable plans such as, ensure 50% appointment of women into the SRC Committees, Liaise with NGOs to ensure periodic medical screening exercises including cervical and breast cancer among others. Lobby for a permanent Breast feeding stand for nursing mothers among others.
On the aspect of Inclusive Governance and Accountability he outlined plans such as,
Promote participatory governance by increasing the number of members of parliament from two to three from each class with paid sitting allowances.
Consolidated SRC budget with departmental subsidies for major programs and activities of all departmental associations. In consultation with the administration establish a vibrant Alumni Association with the main aim of contributing to the development of the University.
On the aspect of Security and Physical infrastructure he intends to provide the following,
In collaboration with the University Management pave the road leading to main campus for convenience for students with vehicles to drive on.
Lobby the administration to increase CCTV surveillance around campus to enhance safety of Students and their Properties.
In the area of External Affairs, Albert intends to
Establish a robust external affairs committee within Ten (10) working days after assuming office
Empower departmental quizzes and debating Clubs to participate in national University competitions and academic challenges to consolidate and assume strategic dominance in national affiliate student Unions such as NUGS, GUPS and PUSAG identify, nurture and support students from WIUC to contest and win executive positions in affiliate Student Unions such as NUGS, GUPS and PUSAG, identify
Groom and support female students from WIUC to contest and win beauty pageant shows organized by affiliate student unions.
According to Albert, the twenty first century leader is a person with dedication, tact coupled with immersed capacity who is sensitive and a proactive manner seeks to protect and provide the basic needs and aspirations to his followers.
He believes that when given the opportunity to lead the students front, he will ensure a smooth and an excellent service through proactive and sustainable innovative programmes that will go a long way in the good interest of students.
