The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has described President Akufo-Addo’s comments on the ‘Agyapadie book’ as a damage control mechanism.
The NDC legislator questioned the President’s decision to comment on the book years after it was first published by Awake News in 2020. He was of the view that, Ghanaians, with the help of the infamous document, have been well-informed about the plans of some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to capture part of the country’s economy.
Mr George’s comments came after the President dismissed the book in its entirety and labelled it as fake at the Ghana Report Summit which was held in Accra on August 1, 2024. According to Pres Akufo-Addo, the content of the ‘Agyapadie book’ were curated by his opponents to tarnish the image of the NPP ahead of the 2024 elections.
The Ningo-Prampram parliamentarian said, “this ‘Agyapadie’ document has been around for the past seven years. He has not found time to comment on it and now at the twilight of his campaign when it is obviously clear to Ghanaians that this state capture is calculated and orchestrated and had been planned with malice and forethought, he is trying to distance himself away from it.”
Touching on claims that the book was prepared by the NDC, Sam George indicated that some members of the NPP have confirmed the authenticity of the document. In his argument, the MP cited Mr Hopeson Adorye, a former Deputy National Security Coordinator under the Akufo-Addo regime, as one of the members of the NPP who have shared different views with the President.
“When he says his political opponents, Hopeson Adorye is one of his own operatives who he used in the Serwaa Broni incident to facilitate many things and appointed him as Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of airports. That’s no mean a position in government. Hopeson is telling us what that document is…maybe they’ve fallen out because Hopeson has moved out with Alan, but does it mean that Hopeson who was part of the orchestration of this document is the one the president wants to tell us he’s a political opponent.
“Respectfully, we would not consider the President’s comment and take them with any face value or seriousness” he said.
