As part of commencement of a week-long activities to mark this year’s National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Citizenship Week Celebration, the Agortime-Ziope District Directorate launched the celebration this morning at the Agortime Senior High School premises.

The Citizenship week celebration is a flagship programme of the NCCE which seeks to remind pupils and students of their civic duties as active [ads1]citizens and the role they can play in building a great nation.

This year’s week celebration also marks the 25 years of the existence of the National Commission of Civic Education and for that matter, 25 years of existence of the 1992 Constitution.

In tune with the theme for this year’s Citizenship Week celebration; “Our Taxes Build a Great Nation”, students at the launch were carried through an extensive education on tax obligations and the relevance of paying taxes to the state.

The resource persons took turns to respond to questions from the students drawn from the Agortime senior high school and all the basic schools present at the launch.

According to the Volta Regional Director of NCCE, Mr. Kenneth Konor, their decision to invite the students is borne out of the belief that the students would be able to send the message on tax obligations to parents who are in one way or the other engaged in business activities.

“The young ones are definitely coming from homes and we know that their parents are engaged in one business or the other, so we believe that when we orientate the youths at this level, they will grow to appreciate the relevance of payment of tax and secondly, they will disseminate this information to the larger folks in society”.

Mr. Konor added that the young ones are the future leaders of the country, and it is, therefore, necessary they are oriented on their actions and be made to be responsible for their actions with regards to the issue of environmental cleanliness as captured in the 1992 constitution.
