The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed dissatisfaction with the approach taken by the Koforidua High Court in declaring Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi wanted.
Speaking to journalists at the Parliament House after the court ruling, Afenyo-Markin stated, “We have just become aware of the Koforidua High Court’s decision. We are here to procure the court ruling and the orders of the court.”
Afenyo-Markin further revealed that the Minority would soon decide on the matter after receiving a full briefing from their lawyers.
“The lawyers are going to brief the caucus and we will come out with our position on the matter,” he said.
Regarding the court’s decision, the Effutu MP, Afenyo-Markin expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “Meanwhile, I’m sure all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that our colleague is law-abiding and ensure that the right thing is done. But we have to say that we are dissatisfied with the approach and we think that he has been treated unfairly.”
Afenyo-Markin concluded by saying, “We would come out fully with our position when we receive a full briefing from the lawyers.”
The controversy surrounding Ernest Yaw Kumi’s election began on December 12, 2024, when the Electoral Commission (EC) declared him the winner of the Akwatia parliamentary seat.
However, the NDC candidate, Henry Boakye-Yiadom, challenged the results, leading to an interim injunction being granted by the High Court on January 2, 2025.
Despite the court’s order, Ernest Yaw Kumi presented himself in Parliament to be sworn in on January 7, 2025, sparking a contempt case against him.
The court’s decision to issue a bench warrant for his arrest has significant implications for the embattled MP, who now faces the prospect of arrest and potential imprisonment.
