A heated debate erupted on TV3’s The Key Points between Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, and Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, over the use of military convoys by state officials.
The controversy began when Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, alleged that Afenyo-Markin “drove around with a 50-vehicle military convoy following him” while serving as Majority Leader.
The Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin vehemently denied the allegation, stating, “This is a figment of someone’s imagination. I have never had 50 military vehicles follow me”.
He admitted to having a police convoy, like his predecessors Haruna Iddrisu and Benjamin Kumbuor, arguing that the practice was about ensuring efficiency rather than extravagance.
Martin Kpebu countered Afenyo-Markin’s denial, insisting that the Minority Leader used a military convoy while serving as Majority Leader of Parliament.
Martin Kpebu even claimed he could provide the names of the soldiers who were part of the convoy.
He challenged Afenyo-Markin to confront him directly, saying, “Let us set a date for next Saturday, let Afenyo-Markin come here!”.
Martin Kpebu further reiterated his challenge, “Please, let him come here next week. What is this? Let him come here next Saturday, and we will show him the names”.
He also read a message from his phone, stating, “It is true that Afenyo-Markin moved with a military convoy, and among the team of soldiers was my own cousin”.
