Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticized what he believes is an attempt by the current NDC government to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking after a National Executive Committee meeting on April 16, the Efutu MP raised concerns that the government is trying to turn the judiciary into a political tool.

Afenyo-Markin warned that the judiciary should not be used for political purposes. “The judiciary isn’t supposed to be a tool in the political game,” he said. “What’s happening now is dangerous, it’s clearly an attempt to make the courts a part of politics.”

This issue has now become a legal battle, with the case being brought before the Supreme Court. A scheduled hearing on April 16 was delayed after one of the justices was absent. The case will continue on May 6, and the situation remains tense.

Afenyo-Markin also called on the Ghana Bar Association to stop remaining silent on the issue and join the fight to protect judicial independence.

He stressed that the courts need to stay independent and free from political influence to maintain public trust and fairness in the justice system.

As the legal drama unfolds, many are watching closely to see how the government and judiciary handle the situation.
