The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has called on the Peace Council, the government, and other relevant authorities to address concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to ensure peace prevails before, during, and after the December polls.
This follows the NDC’s insistence that the Peace Council and the government address their concerns before they sign the 2024 election peace pact.
Addressing a public forum on the topic “Media, Peace, and Democratic Consolidation in Ghana” in Accra on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, the Executive Director of MFWA, Sulemana Braimah, stated that in the quest for peace, legitimate concerns that will promote it should not be left out.
“Well, I think first of all peace is the number one thing that as a country we should yearn for. I think that no government can govern effectively if there is no peace. To be able to govern effectively, the country must be peaceful.
“And so peace for me is a fundamental prerequisite. And all political parties that are endeavoring to lead this country must commit,” he said.
Mr. Braimah noted that the concerns raised by the opposition NDC were legitimate and must be looked into.
He said “Of course, if the NDC has raised several issues to be addressed, it is important for stakeholders to look into them. We shouldn’t also say that because we want peace if things are not being done right at the end of the day we should just sign a peace pact.”
The NDC has tabled several concerns before the Peace Council, notable among them being the full implementation of the Ayawaso Commission’s recommendations, the prosecution of those responsible for the killings during the 2020 election, and the prosecution of individuals involved in the illegal printing of ballot papers.
