Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah’s arrest sparked widespread outrage among opposition figures and supporters.

Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah had earlier taken to Facebook to share his ordeal, stating, “STATE-SPONSORED TERROR AGAINST ME: AN INCIDENT OF INTIMIDATION. I am drawing attention to a disturbing incident that occurred last night”.

He recounted how he was being followed by two cars, one of which was a Range Rover without a number plate.

“The driver driving the KIA feigned making a call in an attempt to avoid confrontation. However, the driver of the Range Rover without a number plate, whom we confronted, claimed that he was a National Service person,” he wrote.

Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah expressed his belief that the incident was part of government intimidation tactics but vowed to continue exercising his right to freedom of expression and movement.

“I am of the strong opinion that this incident may be part of a government’s intimidation tactics. Nevertheless, I must stress that I will continue to exercise my right to freedom of expression and movement, and no amount of intimidation can silence me,” he stated.

In reaction, Herny Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), condemned the arrest, stating, “We have just left the premises of National Security, and it is very disappointing to say that the arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa by National Security operatives after his exams this evening was completely unnecessary and unwarranted.”

He added that the arrest was a clear attempt to silence the media, and that the NPP would not stand for it.

“Thanks to the efforts of several individuals who intervened, he has been released. Free speech cannot be suppressed under the guise of an investigation. If that is the case, then National Security should be prepared to arrest all of us,” he warned.
