In a recent discussion on his YouTube political show, veteran media personality Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) reflected on former President Jerry John Rawlings’ reluctance to step down after years of military rule in Ghana.
KSM shared a memorable moment when Rawlings was asked if he would hand over power, to which he famously replied, “Hand over power to who?”
KSM explained that Rawlings, who initially ruled as the head of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), was unwilling to give up power because he believed he was the only one capable of leading the nation.
In an effort to transition into civilian governance, Rawlings and his supporters established the National Democratic Congress (NDC), allowing him to contest the 1992 elections as a civilian.
At the time, many Ghanaians viewed the NDC as a mere continuation of the PNDC, which sparked skepticism. Despite these concerns, Rawlings triumphed in the 1992 election, becoming Ghana’s first president under the Fourth Republic.
