The government has strongly rejected claims that it has failed in its efforts to combat illegal mining, or galamsey, emphasizing that it is still in the early stages of addressing the issue.

The Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, responded to criticisms during an appearance on JoyNews PM Express on March 10, stating that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration has only been in office for two months and should not be judged too quickly.

Dr. Mohammed pointed out that the fight against illegal mining has been an ongoing challenge for the past eight years, and the current administration is still in the process of implementing key measures.

He also clarified that the process to repeal the existing Legislative Instrument (L.I.) on mining had already begun, and the government is on track to fulfill the 120-day promise made by President John Mahama.

The minister explained that steps had already been taken, including a signed letter to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General, and that the bill to repeal the L.I. will be introduced to Parliament soon. Dr. Mohammed reassured the public that the government remains committed to delivering on its promises within the set timeframe.
