Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the former Director of Communications for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, has called for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to declare a state of emergency in light of the escalating illegal mining crisis, widely known as galamsey.
In an interview on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Aboagye expressed frustration with what he described as the NDC’s contradiction of their previous stance on galamsey.
He pointed out that the government’s current actions, including the arrest of illegal miners and the destruction of excavators, reflect the same policies they once criticized during the previous administration.
“We want the NDC to declare a state of emergency because the galamsey situation has only worsened,” Aboagye said. “This is what they told us they would do two months ago, yet now we are seeing them implement the exact same policies they condemned.”
Aboagye also raised concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s shift in position on illegal mining, recalling the campaign promises made by the NDC.
“During the campaign, President Mahama said he didn’t understand why we were arresting people in the pits, and promised that if he returned to power, he would release them. Now, he is doing exactly what he criticized—arresting them in the pits. Why the change?” Aboagye asked.
