A 12-year-old student from Boadua Presby JHS 1 tragically died after falling into a water-filled galamsey pit in Akwatia, also in the Demkyembour District of the Eastern Region.
This regrettable incident took place on Thursday morning, during Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebrations.
The victim’s home was near the galamsey pit, underscoring the risks associated with these illicit mining activities.
Despite repeated calls from civil society organizations (CSOs) to address the issue of galamsey, some individuals continue to engage in this hazardous activity, even arming themselves to resist government intervention.
In recent years, Ghana has struggled to combat the menace of galamsey, which has severe environmental and social consequences.
The incident in Akwatia has sparked concerns about the safety and well-being of communities affected by galamsey.
The body of the young victim has been deposited at the St. Dominic morgue in Akwatia, pending investigation.
