In a shocking revelation, former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disclosed that President Nana Akufo-Addo asked him to step down to make way for Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the decision was made to enhance the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) visibility in the Central Region.
“The President said they needed to enhance visibility in the Central Region and match up to Ato Forson and Jane Opoku-Agyemang,” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated on Accra-based Asempa FM.
He revealed that he was informed of the decision by President Akufo-Addo himself, who emphasized that it was not his personal decision, but rather that of the entire party.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recounted that he was initially advised by 80 of his colleague MPs to resist the change, but he ultimately decided to step down to avoid an implosion in the party.
“I stepped down to avoid an implosion in the party… I am glad I did, otherwise, I could now be blamed for the massive defeat suffered by the party in the December 7 elections,” he said.
The former Suame MP also expressed his reservations about the decision, stating, “Let this cup pass over me…I leave it for posterity to judge.”
He noted that he had served as Majority Leader for 15 years and two months, and had been a key figure in the NPP’s parliamentary leadership.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s revelation sheds light on the circumstances surrounding his departure as Majority Leader and the subsequent appointment of Afenyo-Markin, as Majority Leader in Akufo-Addo second term.
