The Minority Leader of the 7th Parliament of Ghana, Haruna Iddrisu has described it as a manifestation of legal illiteracy, contradicting rulings by both the Techiman and Cape Coast High courts.
He made this remark while contributing to discussions during the dissolution of the 7th Parliament.
The outspoken lawyer and Member of Parliament for Tamale South prayed that the rule of law is applied equitably without partisan considerations. ”Mr Speaker, I pray and l look forward to a Ghana which does not have a different set of laws and rules for NDC and NPP but the rule of law in all its facet of the rule of law, is upheld. Different ruling in Techiman to have representation and different ruling in Assin North not to have representation. That can only be a manifestation of some legal illiteracy”, he concluded.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) petitioned the Techiman High Court to seek an injunction to stop the Member of Parliament Elect for the Techiman South constituency but the court ruled that the people of Techiman South deserved representation in parliament hence the injunction could not be granted before the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament.
On the other hand, the New Patriotic Party also sought an injunction from the Cape Coast High Court against the NDC Member of Parliament elect for Assin North, James Joe Quayeson.
The injunction was sought based on a supposed dual citizenship controversy. The Cape Coast High Court today granted the injunction, restraining the MP-elect from holding himself as such.
