Eight senior high school students of the Chiana Senior High School in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region have been dismissed for allegedly insulting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The female students were suspended last year prior to the dismissal by the Ghana Education Service which is to serve as a deterrent to other students
The 8 were seen in a viral video using vulgar and unprintable words on the President. They later apologised for their comments in another video which was circulated on social media.
A parent of one of the students who spoke on the issue in an interview with Accra based TV station TV3 acknowledged receipt of the letter and described the punishment as a bit harsh, eventhough the act is condemnable. He pleads for the GES to tamper justice with mercy.
Reacting to the issue, the Executive Director of the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST), Peter Partey Anti in a separate interview stated that the GES must take a second look at the punishment meted out as outright dismissal will lead to the education of the girls been cut short.
He advised schools to make use of the Guidance and counselling units in schools to help students reform.
