The Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Hon. Elikplim Akurugu, has embarked on her first phase of a tour of basic schools across her constituency to assess and address critical challenges affecting teaching and learning environments.
The tour began with an inspection of an abandoned school building project proposed for a Senior High School which was started by the erstwhile Mills/Mahama administration, in Abokobi. The building has since been occupied by squatters and their lands have been heavily encroached.
At a stop in Kwabenya Atomic Cluster of Schools, the MP expressed deep concern over the level of congestion in classrooms, some of which accommodate over 80 pupils per class. This congestion is because schools 3 and 4 have to share the same classrooms for teaching and learning.
Hon. Akurugu concluded the tour at another abandoned school site building in Musuku, Kwabenya. The building has been occupied by squatters and a church.
During her visits, Hon. Akurugu interacted with school administrators, teachers, and pupils, gaining firsthand insight into a range of pressing issues — from abandoned classroom blocks and overcrowded classrooms to dilapidated infrastructure and insufficient furniture for both students and staff. Hon. Akurugu assured school heads and local education officials that her office would work closely with the appropriate agencies to revive these projects and ensure their timely completion.
As part of her efforts to modernize education in the constituency, the MP also announced plans to provide internet access to the preschool of Kwabenya Atomic Municipal Assembly School 2, enabling them to begin integrating digital learning tools from an early age.
She also pledged to support best performing students in the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E), throughout their senior high school education period.
Hon. Akurugu is expected to continue her tour in the coming weeks, covering all basic public schools in the constituency. Her office has pledged to publish a comprehensive report of the findings along with a timeline for interventions and collaboration with the Ministry and Education, Ghana Education Service and local authorities.
She was led on tour by Mr. Eric Sey, Director of the Municipal Education Directorate and Mr. Seth Anyomi, Public Relations Officer of the Municipal Education Directorate. She was also accompanied by Mr. Edmund Agboh and some member of the Constituency Executive Committee.
