A joint investigative team has located 2,637 previously unaccounted-for containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Port, more than double the initially reported figure of 1,300.
Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, confirmed the update in an interview with 3News.com. The containers were found across multiple terminals, including:
- 860 at Meridian Port Services
- 1,237 at GPHA Terminals
- 272 have already been evacuated by National Security
- 194 at Amaris Terminal
- 20 at ATLAS Manufacturing Terminal
The investigation, conducted by National Security, the Ministry of Transport, GPHA, and Customs, revealed that 2,437 containers overstayed the 60-day clearance limit, attracting heavy demurrage charges.
As a result, ECG has been instructed to coordinate with port authorities to clear all outstanding fees. In the meantime, the Chief of Staff has ordered the immediate evacuation of the containers to ECG’s secured warehouses. A comprehensive inventory must also be completed.
Additionally, the Energy Minister has directed procurement reforms to prevent a recurrence of such lapses. This development follows a broader government effort to improve transparency and efficiency in public sector operations.
