The Electoral Commission (EC) will meet with political parties today, Monday, January 29, at its Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, to bring finality to its proposal for a change in date for the general elections.
The Commission has proposed moving the date of the presidential and parliamentary elections from December 7 to November 7. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church first proposed changing the election date.
The church petitioned the Electoral Commission and the Attorney General, claiming that the election date, which falls on a Saturday, interferes with the Sabbath, a holy day dedicated to God’s worship.
The church proposes adopting “the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November” as the new date for Ghana’s general elections, which it says must be legislated to ensure Adventists’ freedom to worship.
