The Ghana Statistical Services has inaugurated an 8-member District Census Implementation Committee (DCIC), for the Akatsi North District ahead of the 2020 Population and Housing Census (PHC) exercise.
The committee which was inaugurated on Friday 21 February, by the Deputy Volta regional director of GSS, is tasked to coordinate activities within the district to ensure a compressively successful enumeration exercise, slated for June this year.
Explaining the role of the DCIC, Mr. Stephen Amoah, a member of the Management Committee for 2020 Population and Housing Census (PHC) told Starr News that, “DCIC is supposed to facilitate the work of the census in the district; they have to work with all the opinion leaders, explain to them the relevance of the census and of course, they would have to do a lot of publicity to enlighten the people within the district about the exercise, including the movement of logistics and monitoring on the ground, during the exercise,” he explained.
He noted further that a census night -which precedes the actual counting, includes a number of activities done as a reference event that is used to remind people about the exercise.
This year’s census night is slated for Sunday June 28.
The work of the DCIC also include recruitment of field officers, mobilization of vehicles and motorbikes for the exercise and the distribution of census logistics.
From the colonial era, Ghana has conducted a total of 11 PHC exercises in 1891, 1901, 1911, 1921, 1931, 1948, 1960, 1970, 1984, 2000 and 2010.
