Awake News has sighted some 2016 NDC campaign paraphernalia in the Medina Constituency of the Greater Accra Region which sources say is meant to be distributed to some party branch and constituency executives ahead of the 2019 NDC Parliamentary primaries.
Our investigations revealed that during 2016 elections, constituencies like Madina had only a motorbike given to the youth organizer from the party head office. This raised several issues within the constituency [ads1]prior to the elections.
However, about two years on, some 2016 party paraphernalia, including baseball caps and t-shirts have popped up in some constituencies including Madina.
Awake News‘ sources within the Madina NDC, alleged that the current failed National Youth Organizer of the NDC, Alhaji Abubakar Siddi who has declared his intention to contest the Madina Constituency primaries is behind the circulation of such 2016 party paraphernalia and has also promised the current constituency executives that he will make available some 168 bicycles for the branches within the Constituency.
According to the source, he is also likely to give out some motorbikes to facilitate the work of the party in the Constituency this week.
A member of the constituency who spoke to Awake News, said, members of the NDC in Madina are wondering why Alhaji Siddi is more interested in being a Member of Parliment for Madina rather than seeking re-election to help a party he saw into opposition comes back to power.
Awake News has made several efforts (Calls and WhatsApp messages) to get Alhaji Siddi to respond to the allegations proved abortive.
Concerns of NDC’s loss in 2016:
One of the reasons the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) lost the 2016 elections was attributed largely to resource hijack. Although a party in power then, there was a consistent alarming shortage of party paraphernalia and logistics making campaigning at the grassroots very difficult.
Going round the 275 constituencies and with an eye on the otherwise safe seats of the NDC that were lost to the then opposition National Patriotic Party (NPP), Awake News’ investigation has revealed the lack of campaigning tools were one of the attributing factors to the massive loss of the party.
The grassroots base of the party at the branch levels strongly felt, the elected officers of the party at the constituency, regional and national levels for selfish reasons kept not only monies meant for the campaign but other paraphernalia including party T-shirts, Baseball caps and logistics. Some of these logistics that were purchased by the NDC for the purpose of equipping the branches and grassroots to facilitate their campaigning included, Sewing machines, hairdryers, bicycles and motorbikes.
