Following a massive operation by National Security operatives, 13 people—12 Chinese and one Ghanaian—were arrested in connection with the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the Tema Port.
The suspects were picked up on Thursday, March 27, 2025, from two Shai Hills aluminum smelting companies at Tema port.
Investigators discovered cables linked to the missing ECG shipment at a Chinese-owned smelter while they were being melted into aluminum bars for export.
In a related development, Energy Minister John Jinapor also revealed that 40 of the missing containers had been recovered by National Security from a warehouse in Kpone.
An Indian national, who is the facility’s owner, has been arrested despite claiming to have lawfully bought the containers last year. Investigations are being conducted, though, to confirm his claim.
Another Chinese national who is on the run is the subject of a manhunt at the moment. Law enforcement officials have pledged to find and prosecute all members in the syndicate.
An investigation committee found that 1,347 containers were missing from the Tema Port, which has caused a national uproar over the ECG container scam.
The sector minister has assured the public all missing containers would be found and that those responsible would be held accountable.
