The strike is to pressure government to end the activities of illegal mining by declaring a state of emergency on ‘galamsey’.

Dr. Solomon a member of UTAG speaking to the media in Kumasi stated that, they were not consulted in the process to calling for the sit down industrial action.

However, speaking to Joynews Prof. Eric Abavare revealed that they had been involved in the decision making.

Though government had met organized Labour on October 3, their leadership believes President Akufo-Addo did not show enough commitment to honoring their demands on banning illegal mining.

In the light of the above, “our strike notice remains unchanged”.

They said “We are of the view that what the government has proposed does not adequately address our demands and therefore our notice of strike remains unchanged”.

Organised Labour has expressed that with the level of water pollution and destruction of forest reserves’ government must ban ‘galamsey’.

The intended strike is schedule for October10, 2024.
