A police statement on Thursday, April 18, said the “driver left the said vehicle unattended on the railway line, leading to a collision with the train.”
He was quickly arraigned in court on four charges including careless and inconsiderate driving and unauthorized stopping. The rest are unlawful damage and failure to produce a driver’s license.
According to a Citi News report, Abel Dzidotor pleaded guilty to inconsiderate driving, a violation of Section 3 of the RTA Act 683 (2004), as amended by Act 761 of 2008. For that he got a sentence of 100 penalty units equivalent to 20 months in prison if he fails to pay.
Additionally, he pleaded guilty to charge two; unauthorized stopping contrary to Section 19 of Act 683 of 2004, as amended by Act 761 of 2008. The court sentenced him to 20 penalty units, equivalent to five months in prison if he does not pay.
He also pleaded guilty to charge three; unlawful damage, a breach of section 172b of Act 2960 which earned him a six month jail term with hard labour.
However, Abel Dzidoto pleaded not guilty to charge four, a failure to produce a driver’s license which contravenes regulation 47(2) of LI 21(80). He said his driver’s license was in the wrecked Hyundai truck. The court ordered him to produce the license by May 9, 2024.
