The Executive Secretary of the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST-Ghana), Dr Peter Partey Anti, has advised the Minister of Education to focus on the infrastructural challenges in basic schools instead of changing the uniforms.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight show on April 25, 2024, Dr Anti reacted to the government’s plans to change uniforms. He said the idea should not even be entertained by the government because there are more pressing needs in basic schools than changing of uniforms.
“It’s not an issue we should even be thinking about right now. We have pressing needs in our basic school system. Policies in the education sector aren’t for a select few but for the whole nation. The government needs to sit up,” he said.
“Basic schools have deteriorated, most of the schools have infrastructural challenges, no access to internet, electricity and a plethora of other issues,” he remarked.
Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum announced the government’s intentions to change the brown and yellow uniforms worn by pupils in basic schools. He said it is part of transformational initiatives to revive basic education and make it attractive in the country.
“We are changing the uniforms of public basic schools in the country. The yellow and brown that you see now, you will see no more. Reformation is coming to a community near you, and you will see it,” Dr. Yaw Adwutum announced.
