A Police Officer at the Adenta District Police CID Command, D/CLP David Kanwononuo has been dragged to the Inspector General of Police for allegedly using forged arrest warrant from the Kwabenya Circuit Court in Accra.

In the petition dated February 17, 2020 to the IGP, Mr. Kanwononuo was earlier facing trail at the Police Intelligence & Professional Standard Bureau (PIPS) over “wrongful arrest, detention and needless reassessment” of the petitioner, Mr. Isaac Azuri.

According to Mr. Azuri, the Police CID Officer, David Kanwononuo who he petitioned against in the case which was being herded at PIPS brought an arrest warrant with visibly cancelled date, name and the offence for the arrest to the PIPS to arrest him [Azuri] after the proceedings.

Mr. Azuri stated that after the proceeding at the PIPS, the Police Officer quickly got to the gate an locked it to prevent him from moving his car out of the PIPS premise at the Asylum Down and then handed the warrant to him but it took the intervention of other Police Officers at the PIPS to allow him leave.

Background:

In the first petition dated January 9, 2020 to the IGP, Mr. Azuri said: “On Sunday, January 5, 2020 at about 9am, I was in my house at Oyarifa when I heard very unusual distressed cries and noise at a church Ministered by my Uncle, Bishop Sowah. The distressed noise and cries attracted several people to the church. I saw the said Police Officer [D/CLP David Kanwononuo] whom I know very well shouting and threatening to throw tear gas on the congregants who were worshipping in the church officiated by Bishop Sowah. The said officer was leading a contingent of police patrol teams numbering about twelve (12) and onboard two (2) patrol pickups and all wielding riffles.”

According to Mr. Azuri in the petition, after inquiring from Officer David, he said the Police had obtained an arrest warrant from Kwabenya Circuit Court for the arrest of the Bishop. He said he then pleaded with the Officer to go and that he will come along with his Uncle on Monday morning which the Officer agreed but allegedly demanded GH¢500 from him to take care of the patrol team but he was able to give him only GH¢200.

He stated that on the Monday, he went to the Police station ahead of Bishop but got locked up by David for two days, seized him from even calling his relatives amid “maltreatment” and “extortion” of GH¢400 from him. He alleged further that he had to pay another GH¢200 to the Police Officer before he was finally granted bail.

The second petition:

The second petition has also alleged that apart from using the alleged forged arrest warrant to arrest Mr. Isaac Azuri on February 17, 2020 at the PIPS, it appears the arrest warrant the police officer used to invade the church premises to arrest the Bishop was also “fake and fraudulent”.

“It is clear the said warrant of arrest was issued on the 3/10/2019, but was changed/altered to read 31/3/2020 as shown here.”

“That apart from the name Nimovi Mobizifa, has been changed to my name – Isaac Azuri to make his unprofessional claim look right”
