NHIA is bankrupt, has just GH₵1m in its accounts – NDC

The National Democratic Congress, NDC, has revealed that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is a bankrupt institution, a situation which is crippling the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.

According to a press release by the Minority in Parliament on May 24, the admission by the CEO of the NHIA, Dr. Dacosta Aboagye that the NHIA has not received money from the Finance Ministry since February is a testament to the ailing state of the authority.

The statement said, the “NHIA is bankrupt because it has not received any releases from the Ministry of Finance this year. In addition, our checks at the Bank of Ghana shows that the National Health Insurance Fund has less than GHS1.0million. This a fund that is bankrupt to say the least.”

The NDC’s reaction follows an interview granted by the NHIA CEO, Dr Dacosta Aboagye on Joy News’ AM Show. In the interview, he revealed that the authority has not received payment since he assumed office nearly four months ago. He, however, noted that the authority’s finance is robust, shooting down fears of impending struggles.
