Attorney-General releases Richard Jakpa’s plea bargain letters

Godfred Yeboah Dame - Attorney General

The Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has released the plea bargaining letters of Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance trial. This follows a perceived provocation by the third accused when he threatened to expose the Attorney-General’s uncanny attempts to implicate Cassiel Ato Forson.

Richard Jakpa said in open court on May 23, that the A-G calls him at ungodly hours to influence him to implicate the former Deputy Finance Minister.

In response, the Attorney-General rebutted the claim while adding that the third accused is the one seeking plea bargaining.

According to the A-G, “Even though the law on plea bargaining passed by Parliament permits a prosecutor to negotiate with an accused person after a plea proposal has been made, the Attorney-General has not engaged the third accused person to give false testimony in the matter.”

The Attorney-General added that the state has relied on the records of the transactions, nothing more. As way to prove that the third accused was not speaking the truth, Godfred Dame said he has letters of the third accused seeking plea bargaining.

He said, Richard Jakpa, “by various letters dated 27th April 2023, 16th May 2023, 30th May 2023 and 12th June 2023, has proposed to the Republic through the Attorney-General to engage in plea bargaining or plea negotiations. This plea bargaining proposal has, to date, not been accepted by the Attorney-General.”
