I’ll abolish the 10% betting tax – Mahama reaffirms

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirm his decision to abolish the ten per cent (10%) Bet tax introduced by the Nana Addo, Bawumia led government.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting in Accra at the Bukom Boxing Arena, Replying a question when he was asked if he consider the Bet tax as an obnoxious one ?

Mr Mahama replied in the affirmative. He diverted to pidgin saying “you see, Boys dey hustle and job no dey, so na de bet they dey do small, small, small get money for Gobe. You see, so I understand, I know say e be matter way concern the youth plenty, plenty. So we talk already say when we come, the bet tax we go remove am”.

He further espouse that, he will find a way to plug the hole of the bet tax, saying an alternative revenue generation will be introduced curb any short-falls in his quest to abolish the bet tax. He added that the current Nana Addo, Bawumia government cannot do away with the tax because it is an IMF conditionality.

“we know say this government then IMF sign agreement, e be so the bring the betting tax, but we for find alternative revenue to plug the hole way the bet tax go cost. So as the young boys, the street boys, the hustlers no get work to do, for the mean time the go do this small, small betting then we go do the 24 hour economy, way e come say everybody dey work, then we go say but you, you dey work …. So for now make the boys bee, make they bee. The small thing the dey get we go leave give them.” …. But we go remove the betting tax”.

Mahama, also reaffirmed his decision to abolish the E-levy.
