The government has despatched contractors to resume work on some roads that were destroyed by floods in the Upper West Region, Roads and Highways, Minister Kwasi Amoako-Attah has said.

All three contractors-expartriates-are already rehabilitating some bad roads in the region.

The government is sinking GHc50 million in the reconstruction, the Minister told the press in Accra Monday, adding that the contractors are expected to work day and night to ensure the speedy completion of the roads to open for traffic.

The award of the contract was not laid before Parliament and this, Mr Amoako-Attah explained was due to the urgency to get the roads rebuilt to link all the areas that had been cut off.

Background

Kwasi Amoako-Attah, Minister for Roads and Highways, promised to reconstruct all devastated roads in the Upper West Region in the shorted possible time after a torrential downpour damaged most roads in the region.

He gave the assurance when he, together with a team of engineers, inspected the roads to examine the degree of the damages on the roads.

Mr Amoako-Attah said the government would mobilise resources to quickly fix the road to resume brisk business.

The destruction of the roads cut off communities, thus, making transportation of goods and passengers tasking.

Before the Minister’s tour, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Central Wa Member of Parliament (MP), who had earlier gone on his Twitter page to post drone view pictures of the torn roads, said they needed urgent fixing.

“Upper West Regional Minister and Roads Minister, your expedited action required .This is one of the devastations of the heavy rains and floods in the UW Region…this is on the Nadawli Road,” Mr Pelpuo twitted.
