Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and MP for Ellembelle, Emmauel Armah-Kofi Buah have filed a complaint with the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the 2020 election violence.
Seven persons [Tajudeen Alhassan (39 years), Abdallah Ayaric (18), Emmanuel Dompreh (36), Samira Zakaria (36), Ibrahim Abass (30), Rita Otoo (15) and Fuseini Musah (14)] lost their lives as a result of the election violence.
In a on Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa said, “it would be a scar on our collective conscience, a threat to future elections and a disservice to the stability of our democracy, if we do not take concrete steps to thoroughly investigate, punish the perpetrators and adequately compensate victims”.
It will be recalled that, in March 2021, six members of the Minority in Parliament tabled a private members’ motion in the House seeking a full-scale probe into acts of violence that occurred in the 2020 general elections.
The MPs; Haruna Iddrisu, Muntaka Mubarak, Mahama Ayariga, Alhassan Suhuyini and James Agalga wanted the scope of the probe to factor in inappropriate interferences by state security in the elections and violence against citizens, leading to the loss of lives.
2020 Election Violence
According to the police, there were 61 recorded cases of electoral and post-electoral violence across the country in the 2020 elections.
It indicated that 21 of the incidents were true cases of electoral violence, six of which involved gunshots.
