James Gyakye Quayson, MP-elect for Assin North Constituency

Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, a Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu Constituency has said the Assin North MP-elect, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson is currently in the House of Parliament to be sworn into the 8th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

This afternoon, news broke that the Cape Coast High Court has granted an injunction preventing the Member of Parliament-elect from being sworn-in into the 8th Parliament on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

The petition was filed by one Michael Ankoma-Nimfah who is a Mason and resident of Assin Bereku in the constituency on grounds of dual citizenship when he was filing to contest which is against the constitution.

The presiding High Court Judge, Justice Kwadwo Boakye Tawiah stressed that the issues raised against Mr. Quayson are grievous and would need a full trial, he passed the ruling with other consequential orders including an order to Mr. Quayson to desist from holding himself as an MP-elect for the Assin North.

According to the petitioner, Mr. Quayson owes allegiance to both Ghana and Canada which contravenes the provision of Article 94 (2) (a) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

However, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson is in the house and will be sworn into office.

When asked if he will not be prevented from the exercise, AB Fuseini said “Who will prevent him? No body can prevent him. He is an MP-elect”.
