Afoko’s continued detention a blot on national integrity – Edudzi Tameklo

Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe on Gregory Afoko

The Director of Legal Affairs for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe, has asserted that the continuous detention of Gregory Afoko is a stain on the nation’s conscience.

Gregory, an incarcerated member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and brother of the party’s former national chairman, Paul Afoko, has been in detention since 2015 for his alleged involvement in the murder of the then Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama.

He denied his involvement in the murder when his trial began in 2016 and maintained his innocence during two subsequent retrials in 2019 and 2024.

Many Ghanaians, however, believe that the continued detention of the former NPP member is politically motivated, as he and his brother, Paul, campaigned against Akufo-Addo when he was seeking to be elected flagbearer of the party.

According to Mr. Tamakloe, Gregory should have been released by now. In a Facebook post, the NDC executive expressed the view that Mr. Afoko’s continued detention is a stain on the integrity of the country’s legal system.

He wrote, “The continuous detention of Gregory Afoko is bloat on our national conscience.”

He further accused President Akufo-Addo of being behind Gregory’s continuous detention, saying “May we never have a vengeful person as President again.”
