The Central Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association, GJA has called on the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare to as a matter of urgency review its new directive of centralizing the public relations in Accra alone thereby making media Persons struggling to access information from the police on critical and urgent issues.
According to the leadership of GJA the new directive has kept the media and the general public in the dark regarding crime and other happenings in the Region.
That, the revocation of the decentralized public relations must be reviewed as the association believes it would not only serve the interest of the police but will continue to foster a stronger relationship between the police, the public and the media.
In a press release signed by the Central Regional secretary of GJA, Kingsley Nana Boadu reiterated the move by the IGP to centralize all communication in Accra is “an attempt to prevent the media from confirming or seeking information and that, such move creates room for speculation and misinformation”
The call by the GJA follows an alleged murder of a trainee nurse in her early 20s by the suspected chief and a pastor at Mankessim in the Central Region where the media could not be furnished with details from the Central Regional police command after several attempts thereby relying on eyewitnesses and speculations.
