World Rabies Day is the first and only global day of action and awareness for rabies prevention. It is an opportunity to unite as a community and for individuals, NGOs and governments to connect and share their work.
Also is a great annual opportunity to increase awareness by holding an event, getting the media interested in your work and connecting with the wider rabies prevention community.
According to [GARC], the World Rabies Day 2018 theme is Rabies: Share the message. Save a life. The key highlights of the event will include the distribution of promotional materials to create awareness, and a two-day vaccination free program for pets, in order to encourage regular vaccination for pets within the district.
”Although effective control measures are available, rabies remains a neglected disease in Africa. The control of the deadly disease in most developing countries poses a lot of logistical challenges.”
Moreover, the event will draw key stakeholders, who will engage the community folks on key elements of controlling, prevention and the eventual elimination of rabies in Ghana.
Furthermore, the World Rabies Day (WRD), is celebrated every 28th September, in commemoration of the death of French chemist and macrobiotic, Louis Pasteur, who first developed a vaccine for rabies.
The celebration is initiated many years ago, by an organization, Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), to create awareness about rabies prevention and highlight the progress made in defeating the deadly disease.
