Why Mahama and Prof. Jane left Ghana shortly after manifesto launch

John Mahama x Prof. Jane

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, and his running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, have been out of the country since late Saturday, August 24, just hours after launching their party’s 2024 manifesto.

According to press statements from their respective campaign teams, the duo left the country to attend to different assignments in different countries.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, according to her team, traveled to Harare, Zimbabwe, where she is expected to officially step down from her role as Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa.

The renowned academic and politician has served as Chancellor of the Harare-based university since October 2018.

Her team explained that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s departure from the university will allow her to fully focus on her campaign.

“The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, on Saturday night left Accra for Harare, Zimbabwe to formally disengage from all her obligations as the Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa, based in that country.

“The formal disengagement from the university, after serving for seven years as Chancellor, will allow Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to fully focus on the John Mahama for President 2024 campaign,” part of the press release dated Sunday, August 25, read.

Former President Mahama, on the other hand, left for Lagos, Nigeria, where he is expected to deliver a keynote address as the Guest Speaker at the 64th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association. He also departed in the late hours of last Saturday.

The event will be held on Monday, August 26, under the theme “Pressing Forward – A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria”.

A statement from his special Aide, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, read, “Mahama left for Lagos shortly after the successful launch of the NDC’s 2024 manifesto.”

The statement added that Mahama “arrived in Lagos, Nigeria, as a Special Guest of the Nigerian Bar Association’s 64th Annual General Conference.”

“Mr Mahama will attend the official opening ceremony later today, Sunday, and deliver the Keynote Address at the conference’s Opening Plenary on Monday, August 26th.”

Meanwhile, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang and her ‘boss’ are expected to return on Saturday, August 31, and Tuesday, August 27, respectively.
