A level 300 Agriculture Science Student of Mampong Campus of the University of Education Winneba, Oscar Komla Bedzra has sent a strong warning to government not to unnecessarily increase admission and school fees with backdoor motives of investing them into projects and policies not directly related to educational improvement.
[ads1]He called on students from the various tertiary levels to watch against higher admission and school fees, stressing on the fact that, the economic plights of Ghanaians is nothing to write home about.
The student front witnessed a major struggle earlier this academic year when all tertiary levels, ranging from the colleges of education and Nurses Training Colleges through to the Public Universities recorded higher increments beyond prediction in school fees and admission fees but thanks to both the strong and unrelenting front of the University Students Association of Ghana(USAG) and the hardworking Minority in parliament most especially , Mahama Ayariga , the Bawku Central legislator .
A press release by the Ministry of Education gave a directive to all tertiaries to maintain their initial financial obligations fulfilled the previous year, after several protests from USAG and Minority which was a welcoming news to all students at the tertiary level.
Speaking to Awake News in an interview, the below are his exact word:
Having observed the economic wind blowing in this current government, I foresee a drastic increment in the subsequent admission and school fees next academic year(probably next semester).
I am by this prediction calling on the National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS), the University Students Association of Ghana(USAG), the Private University Students Association of Ghana(PUSAG) and other student bodies to unify and reject any form of higher increment that may surface come next academic year.
I am by this prediction calling on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, NUGS, USAG, PUSAG and other formidable student bodies to consider the plights of students and act in a direction deemed just , to students at the various tertiary levels.
I am by this prediction also appealing to the sector minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, to act fairly other than which we will resist and protest with all means deemed legal.
I extend my regards to the various tertiaries across the country, advising them to be on the lookout for higher admission and school having observed the current economic plights of students across the length and breadth of mother Ghana.
