The Volta regional Secretariat of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the Electoral Commission to extend further, the closing date for the limited voter registration exercise in the Volta and Oti regions.

The NDC’s call follows over 24 hours of power outage in the larger part of the two regions, that started in the evening of Tuesday till the night of Wednesday, which the party says has disrupted the exercise across a significant number of registration centers in the two regions.

In a statement signed by the Regional Communications Officer, Mr. Kafui Agbleze, the party wants the Electoral Commission, to extend the registration days beyond the Sunday 21st July deadline.

“The registration exercise has been crippled by the recent power outage on Tuesday to the later part of Wednesday night. On Wednesday especially, the affected areas with registration centers across the Volta and Oti regions, could not continue with the process.”

“There was a communique’ from PDS to the effect that the power outage was due to due to a challenge within GRIDCo’s incomer line between Asiekpe and Ho. The communique’ by PDS is testament to the fact that, there were challenges with the registration exercise within the affected areas,” he said.

“We therefore call on Madam Jean Mensah and the Electoral Commission to extend the number of days for the registration exercise in Oti and Volta regions to compensate for the hours lost due to the power outages in the region as confirmed by PDS,” he added.

The limited voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission, started on Monday 17th June, and expected to end of Sunday 21st July, 2019.
