The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson in a video making rounds on social media has alleged what can best be described as a possible vote-buying to influence her voting in Parliament.

In the video, Hawa Koomson is heard saying she narrated that “they asked for some tokens and assured her they will vote massively for her” – as translated from Twi to the English language. The video is purported to have been taken during her parliamentary voting approval victory celebration in which the minister is seen dancing and spilling the beans while receiving a shoulder massage from a well-built man.

This video comes into circulation after the minority on the Appointment Committee level initially kicked against the approval of the nominee minister citing her admission of hiring a warning shot during the last year’s voter registration exercise but subsequently in a week’s time voted for her on the floor of parliament to become a minister. Mavis Hawa Koomson mastered to obtained 161 votes, a percentage of 60.75% on the day of voting.

Meanwhile, the minority at the Appointments committee level stated emphatically that they were rejecting the nominee based on the reasons enumerated below:

a) The Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development could not provide convincing grounds for the shooting incident during the Voter Registration Exercise in Kasoa on 20th July 2020 even though we acknowledge her belated apology for her recklessly dangerous conduct.

b) Furthermore, claims of an ongoing investigation by the Police did not come across as credible considering that there has been no update from the police more than 8 months after the unfortunate incident. Our checks also point to the fact that she has not provided any statement to the police as at yet.

c) The nominee confirmed the identity of close associates who have unleashed a reign of terror on helpless political opponents in the pursuit of their narrow political ends.

d) The Minister-designate displayed an alarmingly abysmal lack of knowledge on the sector she was nominated for, making her unfit for the portfolio and therefore untenable to secure the approval of members of the NDC caucus.

However, the big questions begging for answers are, is this video an old one that has nothing to do with her approval but released now just to smear the NDC as bribe-takers? Did the NDC MPs really take bribes before approving her? especially at the time, the NDC MPs have come under heavy criticism over her approval.

One can not conclude on the video until a thorough investigation is carried out to ascertain the truth behind the video.
