Using Ghana Card as sole document to register would stop chaotic incidents at registration centres- EC

Registration of voters by the Electoral Commission

????????????????????????????????????

The Electoral Commission (EC), has disclosed that the chaotic incidents that have taken root in the limited voter registration justify the Commission’s call to use Ghana Card as a sole document for the registration.

It said the ongoing limited voter registration witnessed violence at some centres linked to the challenge of the age and citizenship of some first-time registrants.

According to the Commission, these would be avoided if the Ghana Card was the sole document for the registration.

During the conference to update the press on the limited voter registration on May 13, 2024, the Deputy Electoral Commissioner, Dr Bossman Asare, appealed to the party agents to use the challenge process instead of physically halting registrants.

“We have also noticed that some of the disturbances occurring at some of our registration centres are due to the fact that some people are doubting the ages of some of the applicants. This is the reason why the Commission has been advocating for the usage of the Ghana Card, which has the date of birth and the nationality of the bearers of the card and the abolishment of the guarantor system.”

The Commission said it hopes Ghanaians learn from this and allow the use of the Ghana Card as the sole registration document in the next registration exercise.

“We are hopeful that in the next registration exercise, applicants will use the Ghana card as the means of identification.”
