UPP Chair to sue EC if …

The National Chairman of United Progressive Party (UPP) Mr. Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah has said, he will sue the electoral Commission of Ghana if the Supreme Court accept the inclusion of the existing voter’s ID Card as proof of citizenship in the compilation of the new voter’s register.

According to him, the electoral commission claims the voter’s register is blotted hence the need to compile a new voter register so there is no need to use the existing Voter’s ID.

This he said, using the voter’s card to compile new registration is the same using the existing one to vote which according to him there is no need for any compilation of new voter’s register should the Supreme Court accept the us of the existing voter’s ID.

The UPP acting Chairman said this in an exclusive interview at the party’s office in Accra.

Use of Ghana Card; Mr. Asamoah revealed that his party believe the EC should wait for 80 percent of Ghanaians to have their Ghana Card before going further to compile the new voter’s register with the use of NIA Card.

He stated that majority of Ghanaians dose not have passport adding that hold Ghanaian will not proof one is a Ghanaian therefore using passport will disenfranchise a lot of Ghanaians from the 2020 election.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other Civil Society Groups are in court asking the Apex Court to direct the Electoral Commission to allow eligible Ghanaians to use the existing voter’s ID card as proof of citizenship.

The Supreme Court in a unanimous decision merged the cases against the EC’s voters’ registration exercise.

The Court also indefinitely adjourned its judgement in the case filed by the NDC which was slated on June 23.

However, information reaching this portal indicates that the Supreme Court of Ghana will give its final judgment in the case between the Electoral Commission and the NDC today Thursday, June 25th, 2020.
