UEW Governing Council reinstates sacked lecturers; re-opens school April 8

Three Lecturers of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) who were sacked by the Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni have been recalled by the University.

The Governing Council of the University announced the reinstatement of Professor Ephraim Avea Nsoh, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong and Dr. Frimpong Kwaku Duku in a press statement.

The three are to return to their various departments effective today April 4, 2019.

According to the statement, the decision was taken following the review of disciplinary actions against the dismissed lecturers March 7 by the UEW Governing Council.

The Council in the statement signed by its Chairman, Professor Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah also disclosed the decision to reopen the school for academic activities to resume upon advice from the Regional Security Council.

“The Governing Council acknowledges that it has the ultimate responsibility to ensuring that lasting peaceful environment for academic work is established on our campuses… The Governing Council further brings to the attention of the students Representative Council (SRC), the general student body, lecturers and staff of the University that on-campus-resident students will only be allowed into the halls of residence on the two campuses on April 8, 2019, and not earlier.”

There is currently pressure on the VC, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni to resign for promoting a culture of silence in the University owning to the victimization of staff who he claims are not his loyalists.

The Kumasi Chapter of the Concerned Students and Alumni of the UEW have vowed to continue protesting unabatedly until Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni and the Council Chairman, Prof. Nicholas Abakah vacate their posts.
