Some University of Cape Coast residents who spoke to Awake News said they are shocked to note that despite the havoc that has rocked the school for the past 6 days no official from the government, be it President Akufo-Addo, any of his 110 Ministers and deputies or the MEC for the area have visited the school.
Six hours of heavy rainfall which started last week Tuesday has left several houses inundated and residents in Cape Coast and its environs trapped indoors which the University of Cape Coast was not left out.
The heavy downpour has rendered major roads impassable by motorists amid heavy vehicular traffic.
School authorities have cautioned parents not to risk bringing their wards to school considering the situation forcing the University of Cape Coast to also suspended lectures as campus gets flooded.
It was alleged that one level 100 student got drowned among several students, and surrounding areas whose belongings were destroyed as a result of the heavy flood.
Residents at the institution of higher learning, however, said despite the “serious disaster to the extent the university authorities had no choice than to declare state of emergency on the university campus, painfully and excruciating one for that matter, up till now, not a single soul from government; be it Akuffo-Addo, be it the minister of education and his numerous deputies, be it Babara Ayesi, MP of the area, be it the MCE etc,.. had been to the affected areas to sympathize and analyze the situation on the ground.”
“Should we call this crass incompetence? or, insensitivity?, U.C.C? Are we safe under Nana Addo?” – they asked
“U.C.C? We shall surely right the wrongs come 2020!” – they fumed.
Wednesday’s downpour in the Central region comes in the wake of a series of floods that have hit parts of the country in a surprise change in the rainfall pattern.
Earlier this month, several communities in the Upper East were affected by flooding and are still being re-settled.
About 200 houses were destroyed and approximately 640 people were left stranded following recent heavy rains over the last month.
Farmlands in Cape Coast in the area have been submerged by the rains which are have not shown signs of coming to an end.
Meanwhile, members of the Ghana National Fire Service have been on the scene to pump the floodwater away from the streets and affected homes.
